ASTM Type I — Engineer Grade (EG)

• Reflectivity: Standard — visible from approximately 200-300 metres
• Technology: Enclosed-lens glass bead
• Lifespan: 7-10 years outdoor durability
• Cost: Lowest cost reflective option
• Use cases: Low-speed areas, parking lots, private property signs, supplemental signs

ASTM Type III/IV — High-Intensity Prismatic (HIP)

• Reflectivity: 3-4x brighter than Engineer Grade
• Technology: Encapsulated prismatic lens

Ontario MTO Requirements

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) sets clear standards for reflective signage on provincial roads:

• Highway signs (80+ km/h): ASTM Type XI (Diamond Grade) required for new installations
• Urban/suburban roads (50-80 km/h): ASTM Type III or IV (High-Intensity Prismatic) minimum
• Low-speed roads (<50 km/h): ASTM Type I (Engineer Grade) acceptable
• Construction zones: Type III minimum per Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7
• School zones: Type IV or higher recommended by MTO

Common Applications in Ontario

Parking Lot Signs

Parking facilities in Ontario need reflective signs for fire routes, accessible parking, speed limits, directional arrows, and exit signs. Most municipalities require a minimum of Engineer Grade for private lots and High-Intensity for fire routes.

Construction Zone Signs
