Ontario Warehouse Safety Signs — OHSA Compliance Guide
Ontario warehouses are among the most regulated workplaces in the province. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations — particularly Regulation 851 (Industrial Establishments) — warehouse operators must display comprehensive safety signage.
Mandatory Warehouse Safety Signs
Forklift and Vehicle Traffic
- "CAUTION — Forklift Traffic" at all pedestrian/vehicle crossing points
- Speed limit signs for warehouse vehicles
- Pedestrian walkway markings and signs
- "STOP — Sound Horn" at blind corners and dock doors
- Loading dock safety signs — wheel chock requirements, dock plate procedures
General Safety
- PPE required signs — Hard hat, safety boots, high-visibility vest zones
- First aid station identification signs
- Fire extinguisher locations (see our Fire Code sign guide)
- Emergency exit signs — Illuminated, per Ontario Building Code
- Emergency assembly point signs
- WHMIS 2015 hazardous material identification signs
Rack and Storage Safety
- Rack load capacity signs — Maximum weight per level posted on every rack system
- "Do Not Climb Racks" warning signs
- Rack damage inspection procedure signs
- Height clearance signs at all overhead obstructions
OHSA Regulation 851 Specifics
Ontario Regulation 851 for Industrial Establishments requires:
- Section 45: "Hazardous areas shall be adequately signed" — includes chemical storage, electrical rooms, confined spaces
- Section 51: Forklift operating areas must be "adequately marked"
- Section 63: Emergency shower and eyewash locations clearly identified
- Section 127: Noise hazard areas marked where levels exceed 85 dBA
For construction-specific requirements, see our Construction Site Safety Signs guide.

WHMIS 2015 Requirements
Warehouses that handle hazardous products must comply with WHMIS 2015 (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System). Required signage includes:
- GHS pictogram signs at hazardous material storage areas
- SDS (Safety Data Sheet) location signs — workers must know where to find them
- Spill response procedure signs near chemical storage
- PPE requirement signs specific to the hazardous materials present
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development enforces warehouse safety:
- Orders to comply — Immediate corrective action required
- Stop-work orders — Operations halted until violations corrected
- Fines: Up to $100,000 per offence (individuals), $1,500,000 (corporations)
- Imprisonment: Up to 12 months for willful violations
- WSIB surcharges — Poor safety records increase premiums
