Ontario Accessible Parking Signs — AODA Requirements Updated 2026
Ontario has some of the strictest accessible parking requirements in Canada. Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Highway Traffic Act, parking lot owners must provide properly signed accessible spaces — and the fines for non-compliance are severe.
How Many Accessible Spaces Are Required?
The Ontario Building Code (O. Reg. 332/12) sets minimum requirements:
| Total Parking Spaces | Required Accessible Spaces |
|---|---|
| 1-25 | 1 |
| 26-50 | 2 |
| 51-75 | 3 |
| 76-100 | 4 |
| 101-200 | 5 |
| 201-300 | 6 |
| 301+ | 2% of total |
At least one space per group must be van-accessible (wider, with access aisle).
Required Sign Specifications
Ontario accessible parking signs must meet these specifications:
- International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) — The wheelchair symbol, white on blue background
- Height: Mounted so the bottom of the sign is at least 1.5 metres above ground
- Size: Minimum 300mm × 450mm (12" × 18")
- Penalty notice: Must display the fine amount ($300-$500)
- Van-accessible spaces: Additional "VAN ACCESSIBLE" sign below the ISA symbol
- Ground markings: ISA painted on the pavement in each accessible space
AODA Compliance Beyond Parking Signs
Accessible parking is just one part of AODA compliance. As detailed in our comprehensive AODA Signage Requirements Ontario 2026 guide, businesses also need:
- Accessible entrance identification signs
- Accessible washroom signs with ISA symbol
- Wayfinding signs with tactile elements
- Counter-height signage for wheelchair users
Fines for Non-Compliance
The penalties for accessible parking violations in Ontario are significant:
- Drivers parking illegally: $300-$500 fine per offence
- Property owners without proper signs: Municipal bylaw fines ($100-$500)
- Businesses failing AODA compliance: Up to $100,000/day (corporations)
- Insurance liability: Missing signage can expose you to negligence claims

Municipal Bylaw Variations
Some Ontario municipalities have additional requirements beyond the provincial standard:
- Toronto: Requires accessible parking permits to be displayed on dashboard
- Ottawa: Additional signage for accessible routes from parking to entrances
- Hamilton: Enhanced enforcement with dedicated parking officers
- Niagara Region: Municipal bylaws align with provincial standards
